What is Neuropsychology

Neuropsychologists have specialty training in how the brain develops and understanding learning and behavior in relationship to an individuals functioning in areas such as attention and concentration, memory, executive function, processing speed, reasoning, perception, coordination, behavioral functioning, language, mood, and personality. Neuropsychologists also work closely with parents, teachers, other medical specialties by providing comprehensive information on learning and behavior. Results of the neuropsychological assessment may assist in diagnosis, educational planning (i.e. IEP, 504 accommodations), medical treatment, and rehabilitation.

Neuropsychological Assessment Process

  • During the intake session parents meet with Dr. Leishman to identify their concerns, review relevant historical information and determine the appropriate assessment focus.

  • On the day of the evaluation you and your child will come to the PNU clinic for in-person testing. A combination of standardized tests, questionnaires, and observations is used to gather data. For babies/toddlers and young children tests are often play based and may incorporate parent participation. For children, adolescents, and young adults, tests incorporate a variety of paper and pencil type activities, administered by Dr. Leishman. Testing length varies based on numerous factors including the patient’s age, developmental level and assessment needs/goals..

  • During the feedback session results and recommendations are reviewed with the parents. A significant focus of this session os assisting parents with concrete next steps, specific intervention ideas, and any needed referrals.

  • A comprehensive report is generated with results, practical recommendations, and referrals when needed. Reports are e-mailed approximately 2 to 3 weeks after testing is complete

  • Dr. Leishman enjoys working with families, schools, and professionals to monitor implementation of recommendations and progress at parent request
